At Inc. Magazine, Helm writes feature stories about entrepreneurs, startup companies, and the inevitable drama of making money. He started there in 2011 as a full-time senior writer, became a senior contributing writer for the magazine in 2014, and has been an Inc. editor at large since 2017.
At Fast Company Magazine, Helm writes essays, profiles, and investigative stories about a range of industries, with a particular focus on big data and massive online games. He has been an Editor at Large at the publication since 2017.
Helm has written feature stories that have appeared in the New York Times Magazine and the front page of Sunday Business section. He has also edited diaries for Like a Boss, a regular column that tracks the busy lives of creative people.
Helm has written two feature stories for GQ, edited numerous web posts on GQ.com, and once ran the entire website for three hapless days while the staff was in Tulum. His interview with Sven Marquardt, the doorman of legendary nightclub Berghain, was one of GQ’s most read stories in 2015.
Prior to its acquisition by American Media, Helm contributed health, fitness, and other articles to Men’s Journal, including What Works For Me, a column in which celebrities shared their personal diet and and workout tips.
In 2010 Helm was a reporter for Bloomberg News, where he covered restaurant chains including Starbucks, Burger King, and McDonald's.
As Businessweek's marketing department editor, Helm wrote about the advertising industry from 2006 until 2010. Prior to that he was a staff writer for Businessweek.com, writing about digital media, science, and technology.
